Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) 2005

"Thiru-v-anantha-puram is a three syllable name meaning the abode of the sacred snake god "Anantha". Lord Vishnu of the ancient Indian mytholgy rests on this huge serpent. This city and district are also popularly known by its anglicised name Trivandrum" Official Trivandrum Website

View from My Hotel - Hotel Hilten, Trivandrum

Pictured above is the view from my room at The Hotel Hilten (sic) in Trivandrum, a friendly hotel in the quiet leafy suburbs 1 minute down the hill from the rather more luxurous and expensive Hotel Regency Tower. Situated away from the areas commonly frequented by tourists, it is easily found as it is next to the Trivandrum Housing Board, a monstrous looking building and well known land mark. Hotel Hilten has excellent facilities and a "family run" feel to it.

My hosts in Trivandrum were the rather youthful Mrs Latha Das, whose true age I am sworn to protect and her friend and colleague Biju "Sunny" Charles.

I gave a series of presentations to the PerformX Institute, headed by Dr. Clement Lopez and at the Trivandrum branch of Institute For Communicative And Cognitive Neurosciences (ICCONS) to the families of children with neurological impairment.

Indian Coffee House

You will find an "Indian Coffee House" in almost every city in India. However, this is more than a mere Starbucks experience. The Indian Coffee House is a benevolent organisation that began under the patronage of A.K.Gopalan, himself from Kerala, who was the first opposition leader in India and was organised by the coffee workers co-operative. All the emplyees are arrive by the reccomendation of existing Coffee House staff .

This fantastic spiraled building is very close to the main train station in Trivandrum and well worth a visit for excellent coffee, highest standard of food and [safe] ice-cream. This particular coffee house has a cult status and is the place to be seen and hang out.

Kovalam beach and surrounding areas are about 20 minutes drive from the city and has some of the most beautiful coastlines in South India. On the way there you will pass the small public Aquarium which houses a variety of local species and a rather large and somewhat distressed turtle imprisoned in the world's smallest pond. Be sure to register your complaint with the local government offices.

After leaving Trivandrum, I headed north by train to the idyllic little junction town of Shoranur, 50km or so north of Thrissur (Trichur). This small town is set in beautiful countryside and rarely sees tourists or visitors. As the token visitor to the town, I found the friendliness and hospitality of the locals there fantastic. The "hassle factor" that tends to go with the tourist orientated locations was 100% absent and the food was great!

The reason for visiting Shoranur was to see the work of the Institute For Communicative And Cognitive Neurosciences (ICCONS) hospital there where a variety of training courses are held and some of the finest work in treatment and care of autism and other neurological disorders is carried out.
