Herpes Simplex Virus Herpes Simplex Virus There are two closely related viruses termed : herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1), and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2). Studies show that more than 500,000 Americans are diagnosed with genital herpes each year, and the largest increase is occurring in young teens. There is no cure for herpes to date. There is no treatment that can cure herpes, but antiviral medications can shorten and prevent outbreaks during the period of time the person takes the medication.

Outbreaks of sores may appear again and again throughout a person's life. Outbreaks tend to become less frequent and less severe over time. Outbreaks of sores may occur with physical stress, such as wearing tight clothing, having sex without enough lubrication, or having other illnesses. Most people diagnosed with a first episode of genital herpes can expect to have several (typically four or five) outbreaks (symptomatic recurrences) within a year. But over time, outbreaks tend to become milder and sores may heal faster. Once you have the virus, it stays in your body and there is a chance that you will have outbreaks. Those who do have further outbreaks usually get blisters in the same area each time. About 40 percent of persons infected with HSV2 will experience six or more outbreaks per year.

Treatment should begin at the first symptoms of an outbreak for best results as far as duration and healing; should treatment begin before the lesions appear, it is possible that the outbreak can be averted. Treatment with antiviral medications may reduce the length of time a person is able to transmit the genital herpes virus to others.
